AGROMETEOROLOGY IN THE SERVICE TO THE USERS "Protecting our forests against fire"

Encouraged by the support of local and regional communities in the Dubrovnik area that we had in organizing last two workshops for farmers, agronomists, foresters and firefighters in March 2014, we proposed to organise agrometeorological seminars entitled "Protecting our forests against fire" in Dubrovnik during 2015 and early 2016 in the framework of our program Agrometeorology in the service to the users.

Since Dubrovnik-Neretva County, because of its terrain, weather and climatic conditions and the composition of vegetation, is one of the most affected areas in Croatia due to the forest fires, we want to sensitize particularly young people to become aware of the importance of protecting forests against fire. In this way we want to help prevent the occurrence of possible catastrophic fires and also the extremely high costs of repair and reconstruction of the fire damage, which ultimately leads to savings in city and county budget, and also the state budget. Young people must be aware that with destruction of our natural beauty we are destroying our tourism and economy.

One of the preventive measures is education, teaching and objective informing of young people. Consequently, they might be encouraged to further educate in environmental protection and they could also spread the knowledge to the public. Therefore the aim of the project is to educate and teach as many young people possible, especially pupils in primary and secondary schools and students, and introduce them with the impact of climate change and extreme weather events on the potential risk of forest fire, prevention measures in protection of Mediterranean forests, other vegetation and crops against fire and all with the aim to preserve and protect the micro-climate, the environment and biodiversity of the Dubrovnik area.
