Croatian Agrometeorological Society is scientific and professional association of meteorologists, agronomists and foresters that encourages and promotes all the branches of agrometeorological science by means of agrometeorological lectures seminars and workshops. Dubrovnik-Neretva County is recognized as an area with a large number of direct and indirect beneficiaries of agrometeorology which are primarily related to agriculture and the protection of forests against fire.
Therefore, in the framework of our program, "Agrometeorology in the service to the user" on March 24, 2014., agrometeorological workshop entitled "Environmental protection and forest fires" will be held in Dubrovnik in the amphitheater of the University of Dubrovnik, Branitelja Dubrovnika 41, starting at 8:30 pm.
Since the Dubrovnik-Neretva County is one of the most endangered areas due to forest fires, our desire is to objectively inform the volunteer and professional firefighters and foresters on weather situations that cause catastrophic fires, and also to inform about climate change and the potential danger of forest fires in the Dubrovnik-Neretva County. This would enhance and improve the methods of prevention and conservation of Mediterranean forest and underbrush. Also, it would help in making strategic plans to protect forests from fires and agricultural development, because they are not the only one endangered. The protection of the olive groves and vineyards from vegetation fires is also necessary. Certainly, it is important to preserve the countryside, forests and agricultural lands, and the microclimate of southern Dalmatia, especially the island, due to the local population, but also because of the diversity of tourist attractions.
The aim of the workshop is to popularize, promote and encourage all of the branches of agrometeorological science, with the purpose that agrometeorological experts, with their lectures, help various users of agrometeorological training, especially to firefighters and foresters, so they could apply this knowledge in practice. Also, the objective is that the interactive communication on the workshop ultimately helps the experts and scientists to improve and adapt their research and agrometeorological information to the customers for the advancement of methods of prevention to protect forests from fire.
Within agrometeorological workshop, entitled "Environmental protection and forest fires ", lectures lasting 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the topic, will be performed. Presentations include practical examples. From the program of the workshop, which is located below, you will see which topics are represented and how many high-quality scientists, experts and the co-organizers, are involved in the work of these workshop. After each section there will be an interactive discussion with an aim to exchange views and also to agrometeorological profession hear the feedback from the users . Thus, communication between lecturers and the participants will enable users to apply their knowledge in practice, and experts to improve and adapt agrometeorological research and information needs of users. Concrete conclusions will be given at the end of the workshop with a view of improving and advancing agrometeorological information to the users for agriculture and protection of forests against fire. Agrometeorological workshop will be followed by the media on TV , radio and / or newspapers and specialized magazines .
This project fulfills these measures from the Environmental Program of the City of Dubrovnik:
• Preservation, protection and sustainable use of the environment, landscape and natural heritage.
• Protection of natural resources.
• Preservation from the degradation of forest and agricultural land caused by forest fires.
