Presentation of an agrometeorologist for the Fire Brigade of Koprivnica
In the afternoon of March 31, 2017, the lecture was continued for firefighters of the Koprivnica-Križevci County in Koprivnica as part of the project “Agrometeorology in the service to the users”. The topic was "The impact of climate change on potential risk of wildfires and weather situations during the large fires".
Since we are witnessing ever more rapid changes in extreme weather conditions due to global warming, the presentation was intended by firefighters to point out that weather conditions are related to possibility of wildfire. Long hot and dry periods alternate with abundant rainfall levels which cause catastrophic floods and cause large losses to the economy.
Firefighters need to be ready for flooding as well as fires, even though the largest damage to the Croatian economy comes from droughts. Increasing dry stress and shortening vegetation period of agricultural crops are the main factors that limit farming production. On the other hand, wildfires do not occur only on our coast, but research shows an increasing incidence in the continental part of Croatia, especially at the beginning of spring work with burning of weeds and stools. Such projects are developing good co-operation between firefighters and meteorologists whose aim is to predict potential dangerous situations, so that firefighters can react quickly, and educate people on responsible behaviour.
