Dubrovnik, January 21st and January 22nd, 2016
Agrometeorological seminar "Protect forests, our natural treasure, against fire"

Dubrovnik-Neretva County has recognized the quality of the Croatian Agrometeorological Society in recent years. They have financially supported agrometeorological workshops for farmers, agronomists, firefighters, foresters, nature and environment protectors and environmental journalists and policy makers during 2014 and 2015 in Dubrovnik and Opuzen.

The cooperation did not end there, in fact, it is even more profound in 2016. Dubrovnik-Neretva County has financially supported the organization of agrometeorological seminars related to the topic of forest fires intended for the students of higher grades of primary schools within the framework of our programme Agrometeorology in the service to the users.

On Thursday, January 21st and Friday, January 22nd 2016, a seminar entitled "Protect forests, our natural treasures, against fire" was held in the two Dubrovnik Elementary Schools. Members of our society, Ivana Tomašević, dipl. ing., and Barbara Mandušić mag. phys-geophys., held their seminars which consisted of lectures on the following topics:

  • Weather and climate
  • Does climate jiggle?
  • Climate, weather and vegetation fires
  • The causes and consequences of vegetation fires

The seminar was attended by 30 students of the seventh grade of Elementary School Lapad and around 130 students of higher grades and about ten teachers of Elementary School Mokošica. The students listened with interest about climate changes and their impact on wildfires. We are very pleased by the fact that the students were very active in the discussion and asking questions, which shows good awareness on the issue. Younger pupils were the most active in proposing measures for fire protection, starting from themselves. In this way they get to know their role in the current problem.

The seminar was covered by the local media on the websites. Teachers and principals of schools participating have expressed great satisfaction and called for further cooperation and organization of more such training for their students.
