Sixth agrometeorological workshop Agrometeorology at the service to the users „Climate changes and agriculture“

The influence of extreme weather on human life in recent years can be read almost daily from newspaper columns. The frequent change of cold and hot air penetration, dry and rainy periods leaves profound consequences on sustainable agriculture, which is consequently reflected on the quality of food we use every day. The interconnectedness of science with economic branches can no longer be avoided in adapting to climate change.

For the purpose of informing its citizens, the City of Karlovac, in cooperation with the Croatian Agrometeorological Society and the Croatian Meteorological and Hydrological Service organized the Sixth Agrometeorological Workshop "Climate change and agriculture" in Karlovac's Great Town Hall on March 12, 2019. The workshop started with the introducory words by Deputy Mayor Ivan Mrzljak followed by the welcoming speech of the president of the Croatian Agrometeorological Society and head of the Agrometeorology Department of DHMZ, Višnja Vučetić, PhD. During the opening of the workshop, animated film "Fire is no joke" was shown.

The workshop was attended by 96 participants from the area of Karlovac (farmers, agronomists, foresters, firefighters, high school students and professors). There were six lectures within two sections, followed by a discussion from which several conclusions resulted.

  • The public should be systematically warned of the hazard of igniting plant residues due to the high risk of open fires, and also for compliance with the legal regulations for maintenance of neglected areas in order to reduce the risk of fire spread

  • The public should be systematically warned of compliance with the legal regulations on weed removal, especially the Ambrosia, which is the most common weed and the major cause of allergy to the grass

  • Encourage raising awareness of climate change and what individuals can do to reduce negative impacts.
