Fire is no joke presented on Phenological Symposium
Within the framework of the COST 725 Establishing a European Phenological Data Platform for Climatological Applications, (2005-2009) and EUMETNET/ZAMG PEP 725 Pan European phenological database (2010-today) the European phenological Database was established with the headquarters of the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG) in Vienna. The base contains developmental stages (leaf unfolding, flowering, ripening, harvest, etc.) of forest trees and shrubs, herbaceous plants, agricultural crops and fruit trees. It is open to scientific research and education for monitoring and determination of climate variations and changes. Since 2010, every year a meeting of the Management Committee has been held, consisting of representatives of 19 European countries (Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Finland, Ireland, Germany, Hungary, Macedonia, Montenegro, Norway, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Serbia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland). The project manager of both projects was Elisabeth Koch, PhD, and Helfried Scheifinger, PhD has been since last year.
The arrival of phenological scientists from all over the world at the General Assembly of the European Geosciences Union in Vienna was used to organize the Symposium on the latest developments in phenology following the PEP 725 meeting. This year's Symposium Croatian Representative Višnja Vučetić, PhD presented the issue of forest fires in Croatia. The increase in the burned area directly threatens phenological observations and research, especially in the Adriatic and Mid-Dalmatian islands. At the end of the lecture she presented an animated film "Fire is no joke" that it liked the participants. They were immediately asked her if the movie can be seen on the web pages. However, the film is copyrighted and only members of the Croatian Agrometeorological Society and a partner at the Public Institution for Management of Protected Areas of Nature of Dubrovnik-Neretva County can display it.
